Kerry began as a Primary school teacher in the early 1980s. After 2 years as a free-lance drama teacher he was appointed the Associate Director of the Auckland Youth Theatre from 1987-91. This unique fulltime position gave him the opportunity to develop his skills as both a teacher and director. In 1989 he was granted a years leave to study in Canada with the Vancouver Youth Theatre and Green Thumb Theatre.
In 1991 Kerry was appointed as Drama teacher at Otahuhu College. In 1997 he was awarded study leave to complete a Diploma in Drama at Auckland University. Throughout the 90s he was actively involved in his local subject association (Drama NZ) and in 1997 he served as National President. In 1998 he became HOD of Dance and Drama.
In 2004 his Department received the inaugural Drama-mark from the ATC and ASB for excellence and innovation. In 2006 Kerry was awarded an N.E.I.T.A (National Excellence In Teaching Award) at Parliament Building for his service to drama and teaching. In 2010 he was granted a Royal Society Fellowship, allowing him to study performing arts technologies alongside industry leaders. In 2015 he was inducted as a Life Member to Drama New Zealand.
Kerry is currently into his third decade as HOD of Dance and Drama at Otahuhu College.
