Dream Seer - Writing Influences

Over a number of years students have emailed questions about what inspired me to write Dream Seer. These questions were usually related to a research or a design assignment or wanting to understand a character in more depth. In 2015 I compiled these notes as a response.

I have Maori ethnicity on my Mum’s side of the family. My great, great Grandmother was Tanumanu Hineka she was full Maori and she married a European trader named George Fergusson in Whangaroa (Northland) in  1863 . My Grandfather (Hineka's Grandson) was brought up in the European way, this was a decision made by Hineka.  During my Mum's childhood, despite being dark skinned, she had no knowledge of her Maori ethnicity. The 1930's of my mum's childhood was a time when such things were definitely swept under the carpet. This is why I have some empathy with Maori culture but it is not a world that I know inherently. My childhood and teenage years were essentially spent on the North Shore which was white and mono cultural. My teenage years were occupied with sport and being a little rebellious and experimental. A typical North Shore teenager in the 70’s had to have a bit of an 'anti- establishment streak' and I was therefore a bit suspicious of traditional beliefs and authority, this is probably reflected in the views of the Younger Tribe Member who challenges the importance of Mythology in Dream Seer. My own Dad was quite old when I, the youngest, was born, and regrettably there was always a generation gap that existed between him and I.
