Kerry is one of New Zealands most successful playwrights for young people. As Head of Drama at Otahuhu College, he has been able to combine his skills as a writer, director and educator to create many outstanding productions.
His early experiences as a writer began with various devising projects in the 1990s, these included Princesses, Wizards and Fools (Auckland Youth Theatre), Leap Before You Look (Northland Youth Theatre) and Family Fortunes (Otahuhu College). In 2001 he was commissioned to devise and tour a multi cultural production titled Tamatane to Guangzhou in China, this production featured 12 students from Otahuhu College.
Kerry has presently written 3 plays for teenagers which have been performed in many schools throughout New Zealand. These plays have undergone a number of rewrites and title changes over the years. Each play is best described as belonging to the Magic Realism genre and they are characterised by using song as an essential convention. The 3 plays are Harbouring Ghosts (2011), Dream Seer (2015) and Heavenly Bodies (2017). In 2015 Dream Seer won the iTicket Showdown award for Best production and in 2017 Heavenly Bodies won the same prestigious award. Kerry is a client writer with Playmarket and his plays are published by Split-stage Publications.
