Dream Seer: Journey of the play - 2015
KORANAUKU Dream my taniwha dreamer, for my journey will be long and the more you dream, the more forceful shall be the winds of time.
I began writing Dream Seer in 1994 with no sense of the duration that it would take to become a fully realised play. First published in 1996, it has navigated an unusual pathway with the addition of a composed musical score in 2002 and then undergoing a change of direction in 2015 to be retitled as Dream Seer. In the play, Koranauku makes an epic journey by waka from the primeval past to the present, this image of a waka traversing time is a fitting analogy to describe the journey of this play. On board this waka there has been a diverse crew comprising of personal experiences, varied influences and key people that have all contributed to Dream Seer’s completion.
In terms of starting points, Dream Seer has a scattering of moments when the story was seeded, curiously few of them fit into any conventional time line. In 1994 I hoped to stage a play at Otahuhu College that was set in the present time and which captured some of the unique flavours of South Auckland. My search quickly made me realise that I would need to write one myself.
